Using the STAR Method to Provide Developmental Feedback
The STAR Method is a structured approach managers can also utilize when providing employees with developmental feedback. The goal is to point the employee to a more effective approach & ultimately better outcome. A manager describes the situation, task & result. They offer an Alternative Action & Alternative Result, or they can ask their employee for his/her ideas for an Alternative Action & Alternative Result.
Steps for Using the STAR Method for Providing Developmental Feedback:
1. Situation/Task: Describe the specific situation or task the employee was involved in.
2. Action: Detail the specific actions the employee took that contributed to the outcome.
3. Result: Clearly articulate the results or outcomes that were a result of the employee’s action.
4. Alternative Action: Suggest a different action the employee could take to be successful.
5. Alternative Result: Explain a different result & associated benefits that may occur as a direct result of the alternative action being used.
Benefits of Using the STAR Method:
-Clarity/Specificity: Provides clear & specific examples, making feedback more meaningful & actionable.
-Constructive Guidance: Helps employees understand the specific reasons why their actions may not have been as effective as they thought & allows them to consider alternative actions & their associated alternative results.
-Improved Communication: Creates a more structured & productive feedback conversation. A manager can focus on the facts & minimize emotional reactions during a difficult performance conversation. By asking for the employee’s input about alternative actions, they can help to gain their buy-in.
By using the STAR method, managers can provide developmental feedback & helps employees understand how they can continue to excel by implementing alternative actions.
